image and carving by Danny Maldonado
A bird whose name I have never known Cries through the city streets In skies overcast or clear It is certain the day will bring rain Echoing through the forest trees I hear a liar Mockingbirds imitating my harbinger I do not know the bird’s name And now I do not know when it rains
It didn’t dawn on me until recently how appropriate it would be to match up my first poem with my first carving. But here they are paired together as they should be. The carving was supposed to be a chickadee, but it looks more like a generic bird to me so it pairs well with the sentiment of the poem.
It’s poetic in its own right, because I began my poetry journey and my carving journey withing a few months of each other. Its quiet interesting how I went most of my life being a terrible artist, in many mediums, to having a breakthrough around March of 2025. For the first time in my life, I feel like I am no longer attempting to make art, but actually making true art.
Keep at it, and one day the muse will pay you a visit.

Reads like walking beside you + hearing inside your head at the same time.
Thank you. This is actually my first poem ever. I wrote it one a whim, because i heard Tolkien wrote poetry. I was so pleased with it, I just kept writing.
